Oblivion Ceremony ••••

  • Prerequisite: Umbrous Clutch (Sabbat, p.49)

Most consider their shadow a superfluous accompaniment, the byproduct of a strong light source against a canvas of shade. Few understand what it truly represents – repressed impulses, rage, and desires. This Ceremony allows you to sever a victim’s shadow and use it against them.

  • Cost: One Rouse Check
  • Dice Pool: Resolve + Oblivion
  • System: This Ceremony has the following rules and ingredients:
    • Ingredients: Silver surgical instruments.
    • Process: The vampire polishes their silver instruments before coating them in their own vitae, and proceeds to cut away the shadow of a restrained victim. This surgery is painful, and cruel mystics delight in prolonged surgery or dull instruments. Once detached, the shadow manifests as a sheet of translucent fabric.
    • System: The caster makes their Ceremony roll in contest with the victim’s Composure + Occult (those with Fortitude may substitute it for Occult), and on a win they sever the victim’s shadow, rendering them unable to use (and immune to) any power that requires their shadow. You may use the translucent shadow fabric to target the victim with powers, Ceremonies, and Rituals in place of eye contact or physical touch, and gain a two-dice bonus on any rolls in the process. The victim’s shadow is returned to them after a year and a day, by wrapping the fabric around their sleeping body.
  • Duration: A year and a day, or until reunited.

To learn these Ceremonies, a vampire needs access to a suitable and willing Mawla. Those among the Cult of Shalim and other heretical Lasombra cults often practice these Ceremonies, but rarely an outsider may earn enough individual favour to break the jealous secrecy of these darkest arts.
